Programme :
Synopsis: This course aims primarily for first and second year PhD students to acquire the necessary basics of scientific writing and for consolidating PhD students to learn how to write and defend their PhD thesis. The course
also intends to highlight the importance of defending one's scientific production and proposes basic methods to do so (i.e., how to prepare slides, present a poster, etc.). The class will consist of two 3-hour courses during which the
techniques and strategies of scientific writing will be exposed, along with an introduction to software implementation (redaction of articles, slides, and posters in LateX, figures with PGFplots, LateX-compliant drawings
with Inkscape), three 3-hour applied sessions on computer in which detailed software implementation will be performed with the objective to produce a poster/slide presentation to be exposed in the final 3-hour session.

Outline: The outline of the course is as follows:

- SESSION 1 (3H): Strategies of scientific writing.
* Introduction to the publication work of a scientist (handling the work, conferences, writing an article)
* Discussion on the objectives to be achieved before the PhD defense
* The PhD defense
* Efficiently using conferences and journal
* General instructions of paper writing

- SESSION 2 (3H): Scientific communication.
* How to write a conference/journal article
* How to write a PhD thesis
* How to prepare slides, posters
* Using LateX for papers, slides, and posters

- SESSION 3 (3H): Applied session on paper/thesis writing
*Objective: cross-reviews, writing/updating a short article in LateX with external pictures, advanced formula commands,
usage of different packages (e.g. French package, tabular, etc.)
* Introduction to LateX: packages, sectioning, formulas, bibliographies, including figures, etc...

- SESSION 4 (3H): Slide/poster preparation.
* Objective: creating a set of slides or a poster on the student research theme or first advances.
* Introduction to the beamer package

- SESSION 5 (3H): Applied session on figure and table drawings.
* Objective: using PGFplots to include figures in LateX documents, using Inkscape to incorporate SVG-based figures with LateX-compliant formulas

- SESSION 6 (3H): Poster defense / Slide presentation.
* Simulation of slide presentation/poster defense in conference conditions
