Ph.D. Call for Applications, 26 PhD positions - ‘Biological and Chemical Sciences in Health’ Doctoral School of the University of Montpellier (France)

The procedure for awarding doctoral contracts falls within the general framework set by the Order of 25th of May 2016 on Ph.D. It applies to all candidates who meet the eligibility requirements in terms of university degrees at the date of application.


The CBS2 doctoral school is organizing a Ph.D. competition:

- To select the candidates who will be allowed to register at the doctoral school to carry out a thesis in one of the accredited laboratoriesClick here

 - To award three-year doctoral contracts in the field of health biology.

 Two types of funding will be offered: ~ 21 so-called "general" funding for which Ph.D. students will have to carry out their thesis on one of the thesis subjects selected by the doctoral school⇐ Click here. In addition, 4 university hospital centres (CHU) of Montpellier and Nîmes, and 1 for INSERM TransVIHMI offer 5 additional funding focused on translational research projects. The contest is common for both types of funding, the choice will be made by the selected candidates at the end of the contest.

CRITERIA FOR APPLYING TO THE Ph.D. CALL
The contest for a doctoral contract is open to all candidates regardless of their nationality and institutions of graduation.

The doctoral contract is open to any doctoral student enrolled in the first year of a thesis for less than six months, regardless of age.

To be eligible, candidates must hold a Master's degree (or diploma recognized as equivalent to a Master's degree).

 

APPLICATION FILE
Every application needs to include the following elements:
• A cover letter and resume (CV) including academic background and professional experience (in particular internships as part of the study program)

• Copies of diplomas (it is mandatory to hold a Master 2 degree the latest at the beginning of the 2018/2019 academic year, for foreign students outside the EU, an equivalence committee will determine whether the level of education is appropriate for the contest).

• Academic transcripts of all courses taken as part of university degrees *.

• At least two letters of recommendation. In these letters, referees are expected to explain how they have known the candidate, their frank evaluation of his/her capability and motivation to undertake a Ph.D., as well as of his/her creative and analytical skills. It is recommended that referee rank the student among all students they mentored (Top 5%, 10%, 20%).

* Candidates who do not have their M2 transcripts (or other equivalent diploma) at the deadline for application submission, must provide a certificate of achievement from the head of the master's degree program that include the rank of the candidate within the promotion for the last semester of study.

ELIGIBILITY

Application forms will be reviewed by the selection committee of the doctoral school “ED CBS2” in the frame of the eligibility meeting on the 4th of June 2018.

During this selection, the commission will in a first step, pre-select candidates that meet the criteria to register as a Ph.D. student in the doctoral school CBS2 providing that the candidate find a thesis director and an appropriate funding.

The highest ranked candidates (approximately 60) will be the only ones allowed to compete for a doctoral contract as defined in the "admission" section.

The candidates selected for the auditions will be invited only by e-mail. This e-mail will serve as convocation and specify a precise time slot, at one of the 2 days for the auditions.

The presence of the candidates is mandatory.
 

ADMISSION

According to the order of passage of the candidates, the auditions of the contest will take place:

Thursday 28th of June and Friday 29th of June 2018

Location and times will be specified on the convocation.

 

Terms of the doctoral award competition organized by the doctoral school

 The contest will consist on a series of non-formal interviews. Selected candidates are advised to contact principal investigators of thesis subjects they are interested in prior to the audition.

 The competition will run as follows:

 

Candidates will be ranked according to 4 criteria:

Scientific knowledge, ability to present and discuss internship work, critical thinking, motivation.

 Students ranked in appropriate position after the competition will have until the 27th of July, 2018 14:00 to accept the doctoral contract. For this, they will have to choose a thesis topic from the thesis offers available on the website of the doctoral school⇐Click here only after having obtained the formal agreement of the principal investigator.

In case of withdrawal, the candidates on the complementary list will be offered a doctoral contract, in the rank order.
Ph.D. students will be employed on a 36-month research contract *.

*The Doctoral Contract⇐ Click here is a three-year employment contract, signed by the Ph.D. student and a public institution of higher education and research. It is characterized by a salary set by Ministerial Order (since July 1, 2010, its amount is of 1684.93 euros gross monthly for a research activity alone and 2024.70 euros gross monthly in case of complementary activities).

The doctoral contract sets a minimum salary, indexed to the evolution of the remuneration of the public service: It brings all the social guarantees of a contract of work in conformity with public law.


RESULTS

The Director of the doctoral school shall submit to the doctoral college the list of the ranked candidates selected for attribution of doctoral contracts and the college votes the list.
The doctoral contract offer is equivalent to the authorization to enroll in a Ph.D. program, however the Ph.D. student is responsible for taking all necessary steps for admission to the Ph.D. program.
The awarding of a doctoral contract and its entry into force are subject to the effective registration to the Ph.D. program in the institution within ED CBS2.
An email confirmation will be sent to laureates as soon as the list has been approved by the doctoral school CBS2 board.
